When Riffenburgh Elementary School opened in 1968, the building was surrounded by corn fields and was further south than any other PSD school at the time.  Riffenburgh was named after Waldo Riffenburgh, an attorney who served as a member of the PSD Board of Education and president for 18 years. 

Riffenburgh Elementary is a neighborhood school of excellence focusing on the academic and social needs of children.  Riffenburgh is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) school since 2014.
